Third Environmental Performance Review of Albania kicks off with a field mission

Experts from UNECE member States and the secretariat will be visiting Albania from 31 January to 8 February 2017 for a field mission in the framework of the third environmental performance review (EPR) of the country.

The third review of Albania will evaluate the country’s efforts to abate air pollution, improve water management, reduce and recycle waste and preserve ecosystems. It will address Albania’s progress in greening its industry and transport and in mitigation of and adaptation to climate change. In addition, it will look into the issues of environmental governance and financing and take stock of the country’s efforts to nationalize and implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The team will meet governmental officials and representatives of international organizations, NGOs, business and academia, in order to discuss progress since the second review, carried out in 2011, and develop recommendations for future action.

The outcomes of the third EPR of Albania, including recommendations to the country, will be peer reviewed by the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy at its meeting in Geneva in November 2017, with the participation of high-level officials from the Government of Albania.

The third EPR of Albania is being organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment of the country. Three countries have delegated their experts for the review: Hungary provides an expert on waste management; Italy has seconded two experts on greening the economy; and Portugal is providing two experts on international cooperation. UNEP has delegated experts covering biodiversity, forestry and protected areas, and environmental monitoring and education issues. The Transport Division of UNECE is providing an expert on transport. The German Federal Ministry financially supports the review for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety and the German Federal Environment Agency with funds from the Advisory Assistance Programme.

Albania is the eighth country to be reviewed in the third cycle of EPRs, following the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Georgia, Belarus, Tajikistan and Bulgaria.
