An introduction workshop and on-site training will be held from 11 to 13 June 2019 in Kokshetau (Kazakhstan) under the UNECE projects on strengthening the safety of mining operations, in particular Tailings Management Facilities (TMFs), in Kazakhstan (2018-2019), Tajikistan (2019-2020) and beyond in Central Asia. The objective of the event is to enhance the capacity of participants to prevent accidental water pollution from TMFs, notably by supporting them in the application of the UNECE Safety Guidelines and Good Practices for TMFs and a related TMF methodology. Participants of the meeting will comprise representatives from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and UNECE, among others. The event also aims to discuss the further implementation of the two tailings projects, particularly in view of the upcoming subregional workshop which will be held in autumn 2019 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The projects are implemented by UNECE, with the support of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment.
