The Group of Experts on Cleaner Electricity Production from Fossil Fuels is a subsidiary body of the Committee on Sustainable Energy (CSE) that focuses on activities that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired electricity generation. These activities are developed and implemented with the active participation of UNECE member States, representatives from the energy and financial sectors and civil society, independent experts and the academia.

Highlights

NEW  UNECE Recommendations to UNFCCC on how Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and CCS for Enhanced Oil Recovery should be treated in a Post-Kyoto Protocol Agreement: revised recommendations as at 21 October 2014 for comment by midday Geneva time on 3 November. UNECE preparing recommendations to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on carbon capture and storage

At its 2013 session the UNECE Group of Experts on Cleaner Electricity Production from Fossil Fuels agreed to prepare recommendations to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on how carbon capture and storage (CCS) in cleaner electricity production, as well as CCS for enhanced oil recovery, could be used in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Group of Experts has so far held three rounds of consultations:

  • On 26 March 2014, the Chair of the Group of Experts, Mr. Barry Worthington, and the Vice Chair, Mr. Vladimir Budinsky visited the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn.
  • On 1 July 2014, consultations were held in Washington, DC with US-based stakeholders, including the US Department of Energy and the US Energy Association. Mr. Barry Worthington (Chair of the Group of Experts) participated.
  • On 23 July 2014, consultations were held in London with various stakeholders including the Global CCS Institute, IEA, IEA Clean Coal Centre, World Energy Council as well as other European and international stakeholders. Mr. Barry Worthington (Chair of the Group of Experts) and Mr. Sergey Katyshev (Vice Chair of the Group of Experts) also participated.

A final round of stakeholders consultations will be held on 20 October 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland.
