NPD Steering Committee discusses management plan for Chu River Basin in Kyrgyzstan

National Policy Dialogue Steering Committee discusses management plan for Chu River Basin in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, 28 November 2011 – The Steering Committee of the National Policy Dialogue on Integrated Water Resource Management (NPD/IWRM), for which the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe is a strategic partner, met for the sixth time in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Policymakers, including representatives of the State Committee on Water Economy and Melioration, the National Statistical Committee, ministries of foreign affairs, health and natural resources, as well as other authorities, international organizations and enterprises, gathered for the meeting.

A national expert group established within the NPD/IWRM informed participants about progress on the Chu River Basin Management Plan. The Chu River Basin is shared by Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Whereas a river basin management plan has been prepared for the Kazakh part of the basin, preparation of a plan for the Kyrgyz part is currently ongoing. A management plan covering both parts of the basin will allow for the harmonization of the management of its waters by the two countries and further promote transboundary cooperation.

The participants also discussed progress in setting targets on water and health under the UNECE/World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe Protocol on Water and Health, for which the Chu River Basin serves as a pilot area.

Organization of the sixth Steering Committee meeting in Kyrgyzstan was supported by funds from the Government of Finland.

Documents for the meeting are available at http://www.unece.org/index.php?id=26921.
