National Workshop on Integrated Water Resources Management in Ashgabat
12 November 2011, Ashgabat – A National Workshop on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) was held on 12 November in Ashgabat by the Ministry of Water Economy in cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme office in Turkmenistan.
The workshop was co-chaired by deputy ministers of water economy and nature protection of Turkmenistan. Representatives of the parliament, the ministries of economy, agriculture, and justice, as well as other ministries, agencies and academia took part in the workshop. On behalf of the European Union Polish Presidency Stefan Radomski, Ambassador of Poland in Turkmenistan welcomed the workshop participants.
At the workshop, there were in-depth discussions of the application of IWRM principles and their reflection in European legislation within the European Union, as well as in the countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. There was also discussion on how IWRM principles should be promoted within the legal framework of Turkmenistan. It was proposed that in 2012 the national Water Code would be revised to include IWRM principles. It was also suggested that demonstration projects be implemented in cooperation with research and higher education institutions to train experts on how IWRM principles could be applied in practice.
During the workshop, participants noted the importance of international cooperation in water management. In that connection, they stressed the value of Turkmenistan’s accession to the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, as well as to other important international legal instruments in the field of the environment.
The National Workshop was organized as part of the European Union (EU) Water Initiative National Policy Dialogue programme on IWRM, for which UNECE is a strategic partner. The National Policy Dialogue on IWRM in Turkmenistan is supported from funds provided by the Government of Norway.
