Event Description: Young water specialist’s session.

The water sector faces significant dual challenges of an ageing workforce and a shortage of high skilled staff to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. To address the high standards and targets set under these goals, the sector needs to attract and support the development of new generation of water specialists.

This session will be organized as a platform to unite young specialists with high level experts of transboundary integrated water resources management. At this session, young water leaders from Central Asian countries and Afghanistan working on a wide range of disciplines from social, technical, economic to environmental are invited.

Presentation of the results of the first Scientific expedition for Central Asian young water professionals "From glaciers to the Aral Sea" (2018) will serve as an example of involvement of young generation into the scientific research as a contribution to evidence based transboundary water management in Central Asia. It will be followed by the round table discussion of young representatives of water governance from all Central Asian countries and Afghanistan about the main Integrated Water Resources Management issues in the region and input of young experts to solving of these problems. Young specialist’s session gives the opportunities to have an open discussion about water related problems with experienced representatives of UNECE Water Convention.

Participation of young water professionals in the 8th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention enables next generation of Central Asian water managers to learn about the current global tendencies and activities in the field of water use, conservation and management. This session tentatively will be supported by experts of UNECE, UNESCO, Central Asia Youth Forum on Water (CAYFWATER) and GWP.
