Kick-starting Transboundary Cooperation: Establishing sound institutional and legal frameworks

Date and time: Friday 12 October, 8.30-9.45 am
Location: Astana EXPO Congress Center, Room n°3. Esil
Languages: English, French and Russian

Event Description

Water knows no borders: worldwide, there are 276 transboundary rivers and lake basins and 592 transboundary aquifers. Around 40 per cent of the world’s population depend on waters shared by two or more countries and over 90 percent of the world’s population lives within countries that share transboundary basins. Within countries, water also crosses administrative borders of cities and provinces.

In a context of demographic, socio-economic and climatic trends that are putting water under increasing stress, coordination among riparian countries is essential to prevent conflicts, optimize water use, strengthen sustainable management and protect transboundary water resources.

This session will present how to kick-start successful transboundary cooperation to make the most of these natural resources.
