Eighth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention

10 - 12 October 2018

Astana, Kazakhstan

Enhancing the implementation of the Water Convention – The role and relevance of the Implementation Committee

Date and time: Friday 12 October, 8.30-9.45 am
Location:
Astana EXPO Congress Center, Room n°2. Amu Darya
Languages:
English, French and Russian

The Implementation Committee was established in November 2012 by the Parties to the Water Convention to facilitate, promote and safeguard implementation of the Water Convention in a simple, non-confrontational, non-adversarial, transparent, supportive and cooperation manner.  While similar committees exist under other multilateral conventions relating to, for example, environmental protection and human rights, the committee is the only one of its kind in the field of international watercourses.  The side event will offer participants the opportunity to familiarise themselves with work of the committee and gain a practical insight into how the committee can help address challenges in the implementation of the Water Convention and transboundary water cooperation.   Alongside a presentation of the work of the Committee, an interactive example will illustrate how the Implementation Committee works practice. Participants will also have the opportunity to pose questions to Implementation Committee Members.

The programme for the side event will be as follows:

8:30 – 8:35    Welcome, Mr Ivan Zavadsky

8:35 – 8:45    An Introduction to the Implementation Committee, Ms Dinara Ziganshina

8:45 – 9:15    The Implementation Committee in practice – case study insights

9:15 – 9:40    Plenary discussion and Q&A, chaired by Mr Kari Kinnunen

  • Reporting back from each group (5 mins per group)
  • Open discussion on exercise and any other questions (10 mins)

9:40 – 9:45     Closing remarks, Mr Attila Tanzi
