Workshop on Water-Food-Energy-Ecosystems Nexus Assessment in the Syr Darya River Basin

2 - 4 December 2014

Almaty, Kazakhstan

The workshop that took place from 2 to 4 December 2014 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, was a key step in the preparatory process for the assessment of water, energy, food and ecosystems in the Syr Darya Basin.
The assessment of the Syr Darya River Basin is part of a series of assessments carried out on selected transboundary river basins in framework of the Work Programme 2013-2015 under the Water Convention. The assessment focuses on the links, trade-offs and synergies between four key sectors (or resources) in basins to identify jointly benefits from closer intersectoral coordination. This is meant to help to build capacity and to move towards increased efficiency in resource use, greater policy coherence and co-management.
The workshop had a broad participation from the Syr Darya Basin countries including representatives of the agriculture and energy sectors, water and environment administrations, state companies and civil society. The programme was highly participatory, involving group work on specific assignments, as well as a brief training on intersectoral linkages and on the benefits of an intersectoral approach to water resources management.
The workshop was organized jointly with the Global Water Partnership (GWP) and in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
