Legal Board

The Legal Board has been established by the third Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention, in November 2003, to deal with legal questions related to the work under the Convention, upon request by the Convention's bodies (see decision DECISION III/3 in ECE/MP.WAT/15/Add.1). For documents of previous meetings please click here

The fifth meeting of the Legal Board of the Water Convention will take place on 2–3 October 2008 in Geneva. The Legal Board will start working on a new challenging task: developing a Guide to support ratification and implementation of the Convention. This activity should be a multilateral exercise with the close involvement of the Legal Board and the Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management, as the activity entails both an interpretation of the Convention’s provisions (which should be the role of the Legal Board), and practical advice for their implementation (which should be provided by the Working Group).

Participants are requested to complete the registration form and to transmit it by
e-mail to the secretariat (olga.carlos@unece.org) as soon as possible, but not later than 19 September 2008. If you need a personal invitation letter for visa purpose, please indicate it clearly in the registration form.

Eligible participants from countries with economies in transition may apply for financial support to facilitate their participation in the meeting. Requests for financial support should be submitted together with the registration form and with a copy of the nominee's passport (a page with the signature) to UNECE by e-mail (olga.carlos@unece.org) as soon as possible, but not later than 12 September 2008.

The working languages of the Legal Board will be English, French and Russian. Documentation of this fifth meeting will be available in English only.
