Project “Regional dialogue and cooperation on water resources management”: Central Asia
National Seminar
"UNECE Water Convention and its role in international law"
Almaty, 18-19 October 2010

The seminar was organised in the framework of the capacity building component of the Project "Regional Dialogue and Cooperation on Water Resources Management" in order to discuss the role of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, to which Kazakhstan is a Party since 2001, in facilitating transboundary water cooperation. The seminar was jointly oganised in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with organisational support of the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia.

Discussions during the seminar focused on the mechanisms of cooperation provided by the Convention in the context of specific examples of transboundary water cooperation of Kazakhstan. Representatives of the secretariats of the UNECE Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention) and UN Convention to Combat Desertification also participated in the meeting, in order to strengthen synergies in the common work to achieve sustainable management of water resources in the region.
