Industrial Accidents


Industrial accidents can have severe consequences on human health and the environment, including in other affected countries. The accidents in Schweizerhalle, Switzerland, and Baia Mare, Romania, have brought this message home.  The Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents helps Parties to prevent industrial accidents that can have transboundary effects and to prepare for, and respond to, accidents if they occur. In focus

An inception workshop will be held on 7-8 November 2018 in Astana under the UNECE pilot project to strengthen the safety of mining operations, in particular tailings management facilities (TMFs), in Kazakhstan and beyond in Central Asia. The objective of the workshop is to support competent authorities and operators in Kazakhstan in improving the management and safety of tailings facilities, notably through sharing good practices and introducing a TMF methodology, which was developed based on the UNECE Safety Guidelines and Good Practices for TMFs. The workshop will bring together industrial safety experts from the Ministry of Investment and Development, Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Interior of Kazakhstan and water experts from the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan. In addition, partners and experts from other UNECE countries will attend the workshop.
