Working Group of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention
The Working Group was set up by the Meeting of the Parties at its first session (October 2002) by virtue of decision I/14
(E F R). The Working Group is established to oversee the implementation of the work programme and furthermore to prepare the meetings of the Parties; oversee and direct the activities of subsidiary bodies established by the Meeting of the Parties; keep under review the need for amending the Convention; make such proposals and recommendations to the Meeting of the Parties as it considers necessary for the achievement of the purposes of the Convention; and undertake any other duties as requested by the Meeting of the Parties. It is the officers and the Bureau of the Meeting of the Parties who serve also as officers and Bureau for the Working Group.
Ninth meeting of the Working Group
The ninth meeting of the Working Group will take place on 13 to 15 February 2008 in Geneva. The meeting is expected to review a new draft long-term strategic plan and revise it as necessary, for future consideration by the Meeting of the Parties.
The secretariat will present a draft decision on conditions for entry into force of amendments and, if available, any formal advice received from the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs with respect to the draft decision. The Working Group will be invited to review the draft decision and revise it as necessary for consideration and possible adoption by the Meeting of the Parties.
The Chairperson of the Task Force on Public Participation in International Forums will present the report of the third meeting of the Task Force, including the summary of comments on experiences with the Almaty Guidelines on Promoting the Application of the Principles of
the Aarhus Convention in International Forums and the outcome of discussions of possible future directions for the work on promoting the application of the principles of the Convention in international forums. The Working Group is expected to review the draft decision on this topic and revise it as necessary for future consideration by the Meeting of the Parties.
The Chairperson of the Working Group will present a draft decision on access to justice, prepared by the Bureau. The Working Group is expected to review the draft decision on this topic and revise it as necessary for future consideration by the Meeting of the Parties.
The Chairperson of the Task Force on Electronic Information Tools will present a draft decision on electronic information tools and the clearinghouse-mechanism prepared by the Bureau of the Task Force, with the assistance of the secretariat. The Working Group is expected to review the draft decision and revise it as necessary for future consideration by the Meeting of the Parties.
The Chairperson of the Working Group will present a revised draft decision on financial arrangements. The Working Group is expected to discuss the revised draft decision and forward it for future consideration by the Meeting of the Parties.
The Working Group also will review the preparations for an international expert meeting on access to information, public participation and access to justice in the field of genetically modified organisms, scheduled to take place in Germany immediately following
the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol and continue its first discussion of elements for the third Meeting of the Parties, scheduled for 11-13 June 2008, in Riga, Lativa.

The eighth meeting of the Working Group
The eighth meeting of the Working Group took place on 31 October to 2 November 2007 in Geneva. The meeting reviewed a draft of a long-term strategic plan and invited written comments from delegations to revise it as necessary, and discussed a draft decision on financial arrangements for future consideration by the Meeting of the Parties.
The secretariat reported on the implementation of capacity-building activities since the previous meeting.
The Working Group also took note of the preparations for the workshop on public participation in strategic decision-making scheduled to take place in Sofia in December 2007 and had a first discussion of elements for the third Meeting of the Parties, scheduled for 11-13 June 2008, in Riga, Lativa.
