Status of Ratifications

As of 19 June 2009, there were 42 Parties to the Convention, 16 Parties to the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs) and 22 Parties to the amendment on public participation in decisions on the deliberate release into the environment and placing on the market of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

With the 16th submission of a ratification, approval, accession to the Protocol - 15 by member States (whicy count toward entry into force) - the Protocol is one ratification away from reaching the minimum number of ratifications needed to trigger its entry into force.

Once the 16th member State ratification is deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York, the 90 day clock begins to count down the days to the actual entry into force.
