EPE called for measures to promote unleaded petrol and to reduce the lead content of petrol with the aim of phasing out lead from petrol. An open-ended task force was established by the ECE Committee on Environmental Policy under the leadership of Denmark, to prepare a proposal for a strategy to phase out leaded fuel in Europe.
The Aarhus Conference endorsed the Strategy to Phase Out Leaded Petrol (English, Russian, Français) for general use by road vehicles as early as possible and no later than 1 January 2005. The Ministers committed themselves to working towards the intermediate targets of the Strategy and to evaluating their fulfillment at the next conference. The Committee on Environmental Policy will promote the implementation of the Strategy.
