The UNECE Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development

The Strategy’s overall objective is to equip people with knowledge of and skills in sustainable development, making them more competent and confident while at the same time increasing their opportunities for leading healthy and productive lifestyles in harmony with nature and with concern for social values, gender equity and cultural diversity.


What is ESD?

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) promotes sustainable thinking and acting. It enables children and adults to make decisions and at the same time understand how those decisions affect future generations and the life of others.

The Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development

In 2005, member States adopted the UNECE Strategy on ESD in order to promote ESD in the region. The Strategy is a practical instrument to incorporate key themes of sustainable development into the region's education systems.

Meetings and documents

The Steering Committee decides on the Strategy’s implementation and reviews its progress. The members of the Steering Committee are designated by Governments of the UNECE member States and include representatives of both sectors, environment and education.

Roundtable at RPM: Role of ESD for greening the economy, 1 December 2011

The Regional Preparatory Meeting (RPM) is scheduled to take place in Geneva on 1 and 2 December 2011 and will prepare the contribution from the UNECE region to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. On the first day of the meeting, a multi-stakeholder roundtable will address the importance of ESD for greening the economy.
