21 May 2014

Rabat, Morocco

UNECE assesses the environmental performance of Morocco

Rabat. UNECE, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the Ministry of Energy, Mining, Water and Environment of Morocco launched the Environmental Performance Review (EPR) report of Morocco today, 21 May 2014, in front of an audience of key Governmental institutions, NGOs, the private sector, international organisations and mass media.

Mrs. Hakima El Haite, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Energy, Mining, Water and Environment, for the environment, Mrs. Ivonne Higuero, Chief of Operational Activities and Review Section, UNECE Environment Division, and Mrs. Karima Bounemra Ben Soltane, Director, UNECA Office for North Africa, made presentations on the different aspects of the EPR report for Morocco.

The Review concludes with a set of 60 recommendations to help Morocco to improve its environmental management, to better integrate the goals of sustainable development into sectoral policies, to promote greater accountability to the public and to strengthen cooperation with the international community. The recommendations of the EPR will be integrated into the country’s environmental protection policy and sustainable development strategy, thus contributing significantly to the improvement of environmental management and the further integration of environmental and economic concerns.
