Kyrgyzstan-Kazakhstan Pilot Study |
 |
Jeroy gold and copper mine in the Talas River basin (Kyrgyzstan)
A transboundary EIA pilot project involving Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan has been initiated, with kick-off seminar held 26-27 January 2006, Bishkek.
The project is being funded with support from the Government of Norway and is being managed by the OSCE and UNECE in cooperation with the State Agency on Environmental Protection and Forestry of the Kyrgyz Republic.
As of April 2007, the pilot project was developing as planned. A public hearing with more than 100 participants was held 20 March 2007. The cooperation between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan was working well.
In addition to the implementation of the pilot EIA, the two countries will also have an opportunity to revise their EIA procedures within the project. A regional conference will finalize the project. The project could be finalized before the next meeting of the Parties (Bucharest, May 2008). |
