Sustainable Development in UNECE

FOURTH REGIONAL IMPLEMENTATION MEETING ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Fourth Regional Implementation Meeting (RIM-4) took place in Geneva on 1 and 2 December 2009 (Palais des Nations, salle XVII). RIM-4 prepared the contribution from the UNECE region to the 18th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18) which will be held from 3 – 14 May 2010 in New York.

CSD-18 will open the fourth two-year cycle of its multi-year work programme with a focus on the following main thematic issues:
-> Transport;
-> Chemicals;
-> Waste management;
-> Mining; and
-> 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption & Production Patterns.

RIM-4 evaluated progress made in implementing sustainable development goals in the above areas in the UNECE region and identify obstacles and constraints. The meeting also discussed the challenges ahead and necessary next steps to be taken.

RIM-4 also addressed linkages between these thematic issues and a number of cross-cutting issues. Furthermore, at the beginning of the session on cross-cutting issues interested Governments had the opportunity to report back on the implementation of the CSD-17 outcomes.

The Co-Chairs' Summary of the meeting will be available by 21 December 2009 and the report of the meeting - by the end of the year. A preparatory meeting on Sustainable Consumption and Production for the Fourth Regional Implementation Meeting on Sustainable Development was organized by UNEP on 30 November 2009 (Palais des Nations, salle VII). The objectives of the meeting were: (a) to discuss and recommend the contribution from the UNECE region on the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production; and (b) to identify the regional and sub-regional Sustainable Consumption and Production priorities. On their way to the meeting, delegates should obtain an identification badge at the Pass and Identification Unit of the United Nations Office at Geneva’s Security and Safety Section, located at the Pregny Gate, 14, Avenue de la Paix (see map).
