Capacity Building Workshop on Best Practices in Coal Mine Methane Capture and Utilization

24 - 25 July 2018

Hotel Radisson AR, Bogota, Colombia

A two day-long capacity-building workshop on Best Practices in Coal Mine Methane (CMM) Capture and Utilization was delivered jointly by the UNECE Group of Experts on CMM and the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) on 24-25 July 2018 in Bogota, Columbia.

Over the last decade Colombia has been actively participating in the work of the UNECE Group of Experts on CMM.

The Invitation for the Group of Experts to deliver a workshop in the country was extended by UPME - the Unit for Mining and Energy Planning of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

However, the list of institutions that were represented at the event was much longer and included the following:

All the above institutions had been consulted during the fact-finding mission to the country that the Group organized in March 2018. The mission was conducted in order to assess the CMM conditions on the ground and enable the Group of Experts to prepare a capacity-building activity addressing the most important local problems and needs in the field in question.

On the basis of the information gathered by the experts during their initial visit to Colombia the following subjects were identified as key issues requiring Group's attention:

  • Calculation of Methane Gas Reserves in Coal Beds;
  • Mine Safety;
  • Ventilation;
  • Drainage and Co-Development of Coal and Gas Resources;
  • Abandoned Mine Methane;
  • CMM/AMM/VAM Project Development.

Please see below a report from the fact-finding mission.

As a result, the above-mentioned issues constituted the thematic blocks that were discussed at the workshop.

To learn more about the event please see below its agenda and the presentations delivered in its course.
