Myrdal Lectures

Once a year, on the occasion of the Annual Session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the ECE invites a distinguished economist to deliver the Myrdal Lecture on a major international economic issue. The lecture series is named in honour of Gunnar Myrdal, first Executive Secretary of the ECE (1947-1957) and winner of the 1974 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.

The 2006 Myrdal Lecture, "Welfare Policies in the UNECE: Why so different?", was given by Alberto Alesina, Harvard University, on 12 May at 3 pm in Salle XVIII of the Palais des Nations.

The lecture is available in English.

The 2005 Myrdal Lecture, "Global Governance: Lessons from Europe", was given by Pascal Lamy, former EU Trade Commissioner, on 22 February at 6 pm in Salle XX of the Palais des Nations.
