ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
The analytical work in economics falls into
two broad categories. The first consists of the analysis of
short-term economic developments and prospects in the region
overall, its sub-regions and in individual countries. Development
in the following fields are covered: macroeconomic policies,
demand and output, inflation, labour markets, foreign trade,
balance of payments. The second category of the research undertaken
by EAD consists of the in-depth analysis of specific topics,
such as East-West European economic integration, the transition
process, structural change, convergence, social issues, sustainable
development, gender aspects of economic processes, etc.
The results of EAD’s work are available
to the general public through a range of publications on economics
and population issues.
The Economic Analysis Division endeavours
to serve the ECE
region to achieve the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) by integrating the three
dimensions of sustainable
development. To attain this objective, the Division
examines not only macroeconomic and sectoral developments,
but also issues such as financing
for development, institutions and development,
population issues and ageing,
ICT initiatives and gender
dimension. It seeks to play a leading role in
raising awareness and guiding the economic decision-making
process.
In order to stimulate policy debate and achieve
a better understanding of present relevant economic and social
issues, throughout the year EAD organizes a series of seminars,
lectures and workshops.
For its work, EAD relies on the ECE Common
Database managed by the Statistics
Division of UNECE and also works closely with
other Divisions and programmes of UNECE (e.g. Industrial
Restructuring, Energy and Enterprise Development, Environment,
Transport).
