Director General for Industrial Policy, Competitiveness and SMEs, Ministry of Economic Development, Italy

 

Stefano Firpo, 45 years old, is Director General for Industrial Policy, Competitiveness and Small and Medium Enterprises at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. He was appointed in this position in March 2015. He is also national SME Envoy and Garante della Piccola e Media Impresa. Since 2011 he has been Chief of the Italian Minister of Economic Development Technical Secretariat, holding this position in three Governments (Monti, Letta and Renzi). He was member of the Economic policy coordination Group for the Prime Minister office. 

 

His main areas of policy-making activity include: the design and implementation of the Italian National Plan on Industry 4.0, the design and implementation of the legislation on innovative startups and SMEs; the drafting of the “Destinazione Italia” report.

 

In the past, he worked as an economist at the European Central Bank and at Intesa Sanpaolo Banking Group as Head of the CEO’s Staff office. 

 

He graduated in Political Sciences at the University of Turin, and got a post-graduate specialization in International Economics at the London School of Economics.
