Dr Alcorta is the current Chief Technical Advisor on Industrial Strategy to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) of Oman (UNIDO Secondment),  responsible for preparing Oman Industrial Development Strategy 2040 and researching and giving advice on Oman manufacturing industry development and policies. 

 

He is the former Director of UNIDO Development Policy, Statistics and Strategic Research Department; in that capacity he led a team responsible for, among other things,  generating global and thematic evidence-based understanding of the role of industrialization on sustainable development and preparing industrial policy recommendations for countries and regions.

 

Dr. Alcorta is currently also Professor of Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Development, UNU MERIT, School of Business and Economics (SBE), University of Maastricht. Prior to joining UNIDO Dr. Alcorta served as a Professor in Economics of Technology and Innovation and Associate Dean for Research at the Maastricht School of Management, he was a Research Fellow at the Institute for New Technologies, United Nations University and worked as an Economist for Latin America at the Economist Intelligence Unit and Midland Bank (part of the HSBC group). 

 

He has published extensively in the areas of new technologies, innovation, industrialization and development.

 

Dr. Alcorta holds a Bachelor and Master in Economics from Universidad del Pacífico, Lima, as well as a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies and a PhD both from the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK.
