Special Envoy-EU Commissioner Joint Mission in Jordan

On 27-29 January 2019, the Special Envoy, jointly with the European Commissioner for Transport, traveled to Amman, Jordan on an official mission. In the course of the visit, they met with key road safety stakeholders at the highest level, including King of Jordan and the Prime-Minister. 
 
Among key discussion topics was recently developed draft national road safety strategy 2019-2023 with a target to reduce road traffic fatality rate by 20 per cent, the importance of strong and accurate road data collection and applying safe system approach. 

 

It was agreed that the Special Envoy and the European Commissioner will provide detailed feedback on the draft strategic plan before its official launch in autumn 2019. The government of Jordan was strongly encouraged to improve data management and consider accession to United Nations road safety conventions.

On 27 January, the Special Envoy met with the UNCT in Jordan to discuss the road safety situation in the country and its challenges as well as the way forward. The Special Envoy shared about key priorities of his assigned mandate, which include promoting United Nations road safety conventions and mobilizing resources towards advancing road safety globally. He shared about the meetings scheduled with Jordan’s government officials and encouraged the UNCT to support the government in ensuring that the recommendations made during the visit are implemented in a timely manner. 
 
The UNCT members shared about their road safety initiatives, including efforts to address road safety education and drivers’ training. In conclusion, the Special Envoy shared about the recently established UNRSTF and the upcoming launch of the UN Internal Road Safety Strategy, highlighting the role of country offices in its implementation.
