The first-ever regional road safety workshop organized by the Special Envoy's office was held in Nairobi, Kenya from 13 to 15 December 2016 with Kenyan National Transport and Safety Authority as the in-country host.
The workshop was participated by road safety experts from more than 20 African countries and NGOs, and focused on road safety data management and the UN Road Safety Conventions, which are highlighted as key priorities in the African Road Safety Action Plan.
Mr. Jean Todt, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Road Safety opened the workshop by reiterating the severe situation faced by Africa on road traffic fatalities. He further emphasized the importance of regional cooperation. “We must work together, especially regionally, to build a transport culture that prioritizes safety. This means that we must invest in quality data to better help us make strategic investments in road safety”, he said.
The workshop was co-organized by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the World Bank's Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) and International Road Traffic and Accident Database (IRTAD).
