Peter Füglistaler, Director, Swiss Federal Office of Transport will talk on:

"New railway base tunnels in Switzerland: improving logistics between the dots in Europe"

Short Bio

Dr Peter Füglistaler, born on 24th July 1959, has been Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT) since June 2010. Public transport in Switzerland is safe, efficient, economic and environmentally friendly. The FOT is responsible for helping to design and implementing Swiss government policy on public transport. The FOT experts have oversight of passenger and freight transport by rail, cableways and chairlifts, buses and ships. Before coming to work for the FOT, Peter Füglistaler was Head of Finance and Legal Affairs, and member of the SBB Infrastructure Management Board, and prior to that, Secretary General of the SBB (Swiss Railways).

Summary of presentation

Mr. Füglistaler will show the contribution of the new railway base tunnels to the improvement of logistics between the dots in Europe. After a description of the Lötschberg, Gotthard and Ceneri tunnels and their financing schemes, the advantages of these new infrastructures for the operation of railways will be listed. Furthermore, the importance of these Swiss investments for the Rhine-Alpine corridor and the development of combined transport will be mentioned.
