UN/FLUX standard

Overfishing and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU) negatively impact sustainable fisheries, livelihoods, and world fish stocks. In 2016, illicit fishing accounted for a staggering 25% of fish of the annual ocean harvest, and was valued at up to $23 billion, which is lost each year to legitimate fishers. Additionally, such practices threaten local biodiversity and food security in many countries. An essential step for an effective management of fish resources is the timely acquisition of information on vessels, stocks and catches as well as the exchange of such information between stakeholders.

Our Focus

To address this, UNECE had a dedicated Team of Specialists on Sustainable Fisheries whose aim was to promote, facilitate and support the implementation of sustainable fisheries standards on a global scale, and particularly the Fisheries Language for Universal Exchange (UN/FLUX).  In 2021 UNECE broadened the focus of the Team of Specialists (ToS) on Sustainable Fisheries to Environmental, Social and Governance traceability of sustainable value chains in the circular economy.
