The standards encourage high-quality production, improve profitability and protect consumer interests. UNECE standards are used internationally by Governments, producers, traders, importers, exporters and international organizations. They cover a wide spectrum of agricultural products: fresh fruit and vegetables (FFV), dry and dried produce (DDP), seed potatoes, meat, cut flowers, eggs and egg products. According to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization, a gigantic amount of 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted every year. The loss can occur at any stage of the supply chain. A host of reasons are at play for such a huge amount of food waste or losses. One important and often cited factor is the requirements or standards –quality and also food safety standards at retail stages. A number of other factors point at poor production practices, inappropriate post-harvest techniques, lack of adequate storage facilities, poor transportation etc. With a world population expected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, food production will have to increase by approximately 60%.
Against this background, the UNECE and FAO in Geneva will jointly organize a Conference on Food Loss on 10 November 2016 in Geneva. In addition to providing an overview of the food loss and waste situation globally, it will discuss the role of quality requirements and standards and their potential role in causing but more importantly avoiding food losses around the globe.

To mark the International Year of Pulses the UNECE, FAO and Permanent Missions of Turkey, Pakistan, Namibia to the United Nations in Geneva and others hosted a culinary exhibition in the Palais des Nations on 19 April 2016 to showcase the large variety of pulses available, a multitude of culinary options, the role of pulses for sustainable development and food security.
