Managing forest resources sustainably

The UNECE region covers 43% of the world’s forests, and accounts for 60% of wood provision. UNECE provides comprehensive support for the sustainable management of the region’s forest resources which are vital for environmental protection, economic development and climate action.

This ranges from sustainability roadmaps (Rovaniemi Action Plan for the Forest Sector in a Green Economy) to the promotion of sustainable forest management certification, support for the use of wood as a renewable material of the future and the production of go-to outlook resources for the sector.

Helping countries to harness forests’ sustainable development potential, UNECE and FAO have supported Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in their commitment to restore around 3 million hectares from degraded land to healthy, productive forests by 2030 under the Bonn Challenge.
