UNECE participates in the inauguration workshop for the activation of the TIR system in Qatar

13 April 2018
Following the accession of Qatar to the TIR Convention, 1975 on 25 January 2018, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) of Qatar and the International Road Transport Union (IRU) started preparing a roadmap on the activation of the TIR system in Qatar. To this end, a workshop was held in Doha on 10-12 April 2018 with the participation of representatives from MoTC and the General Authority of Customs, as well as representatives from the trade and transport industries.
UNECE actively participated in the workshop by means of introducing the administrative structure of the TIR Convention and elaborating the role of TIRExB, the intergovernmental body supervising the application of the TIR system. UNECE informed the participants also about the latest activities in the field of transport and on a variety of legal instruments developed under the auspices of the UNECE Inland Transport Committee such as ADR (1957), ATP (1970), CMR (1956) and Harmonization (1982). The event yielded beneficial discussions on the use of TIR for intermodal transport and the benefits of the TIR system for the foreign trade of Qatar.
