Environment statistics

Review paper by Eurostat

In-depth review on environment statistics
The Bureau reviewed environment statistics in February 2008, and noted that coordination has improved in the area while the main problem is the prioritization of the activities towards a coherent system of environment statistics.
Outcome of the review
In 2009, CES and the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy set up a Joint Task Force on Environmental Indicators to improve the production and quality of environmental data in the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, and South-East Europe.
Related initiatives
In 2012-2013 UNECE conducted a capacity building project on indicators of environmental sustainability for East Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia with support from the UN Development Account. The project reviewed challenges on environmental indicators and provided a number of training workshops on waste statistics, sustainable development, the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) and argi-environment statistics.

In 2012, the UN Statistical Commission endorsed the SEEA Central Framework as the initial version of the international standard for environmental-economic accounts, subject to further revision with input for example from Eurostat, OECD, UNECE and the World Bank. Next year, the UNSC endorsed the Revised Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES) with input for example from Eurostat.

Currently, UNECE is assessing the feasibility of launching a database on environmental indicators of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. The Joint Task Force is updating the publication Environmental Indicator Guidelines.
