Funding of Technical Cooperation Activities

The UNECE technical cooperation activities are funded from the UN Regular Budget, in particular its sections "Economic Development in Europe", "Regular Programme of Technical Cooperation" (RPTC) and "United Nations Development Account", as well as by extrabudgetary resources.

Resources for technical cooperation are used by the UNECE to (i) support countries with economies in transition in their accession to, and implementation of UNECE international legal instruments, norms, standards and regulations; (ii) strengthen national capacities to develop institutional frameworks for subregional and regional integration and improve their transboundary cooperation; and (iii) support their efforts to achieve internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The regular budget resources are used to leverage extrabudgetary resources, which account for the largest part of funding of UNECE technical cooperation. The importance of these resources for funding the UNECE technical cooperation activities has been increasing in the last few years.

The extrabudgetary contributions to the UNECE Trust Funds originate from a variety of bilateral and multilateral sources: UNECE member States, the private sector, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations (the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, the International Road Union, the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Health Organization, etc) and the European Commission.
