UNECE signs Partnership for Sustainable Development with the Kyrgyz Republic for 2018-2022

UNECE and the United Nations Country Team will strengthen their support to Kyrgyzstan’s development efforts over the next five years. This will be achieved through the implementation of a United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for 2018 – 2022 signed on 19 May by the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Mr. Sooronbay Jeenbekov and the United Nations Country Team. The UNDAF, which summarized the collective strategic response of the United Nations system to national development challenges over 2018-2022, isaligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UNDAF is structured around four areas:

  • Sustainable and inclusive economic growth;
  • Good Governance, rule of law, human rights and gender equality;
  • Environment, climate change, and disaster risk management;
  • Social protection, health and education.

UNECE has committed to contribute to the following UNDAF outcomes:
  • By 2022, inclusive and sustainable industrial, agricultural and rural development contribute to economic growth, decent work, improved livelihoods, food security and nutrition, especially among women and vulnerable groups.
  • By 2022, communities are more resilient to climate and disaster risks and are engaged in sustainable and inclusive natural resource management and risk-informed development.

During the next five years, UNECE will provide technical assistance to Kyrgyzstan in a variety of areas including strengthening regulatory and procedural frameworks to trade, implementing the recommendations of the innovation performance review, improving national capacities for data collection to monitor the progress on energy related SDGs as well supporting development of renewable energy models for the rural population. In the area of environment, UNECE will deliver capacity building activities on the transboundary effects of industrial accidents, enhance transboundary cooperation in the Chu and Talas basins, and implement the third Environmental Performance Review of the country. Other areas of UNECE contribution include the development of accountability systems for sustainable forest management, enhancing policies for sustainable housing and supporting Kyrgyzstan in implementing public-private partnerships.

The full-scale implementation of his 2018-2022 UNDAF will require an estimated total of USD 221,171 mln.
