At the Fourth World Conference on Women, UN member States adopted and committed to implement the Beijing Platform for Action, which identifies twelve critical areas of concern with respect to the advancement of women and the achievement of gender equality. Worldwide progress in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action is reviewed every five years by the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
The five UN regional commissions, in cooperation with the Division for the Advancement of Women, coordinate the review and appraisal process. With its periodically organized regional reviews of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, UNECE provides a forum for its member States to monitor progress and identify remaining challenges on a regional level.
The Beijing + 15 Regional Review Meeting was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 2-3 November 2009. The 15th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action will be celebrated in March 2010 at the 54th session of the Commission of the Status of Women. Read more
In compliance with the decisions of the 59th UNECE Annual Session and of the Ad Hoc Informal Meeting of the Commission (28 May 2004), the UNECE Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 10-year review of Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (Beijing +10) was held on 14-15 December 2004 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. At its 54th session the UN Economic Commission for Europe decided to convene an expert meeting at the intergovernmental level, at the request of the General Assembly, in order to provide a regional assessment for the 2000 review of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. The UNECE Regional Preparatory Meeting on the 2000 Review of the Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action was held in Geneva from 19-21 January 2000. Read more
